There are many benefits associated with K-12 schools. In the SS2020 vision, with new schools within a short distance from one another in a campus, resources can be shared, peer teaching and learning opportunities are strengthened, and teacher collaboration spanning grades is made possible, among other things.
A Sustainability Study of Sackville’s 3 schools is about to begin. The DEC has scheduled three public meetings as part of the formal consultation process, and all members of the community are encouraged to take part.
Change is on the horizon and we believe that Sackville is well positioned to be the first New Brunswick community to respond to this new, multi-million dollar provincial fund through the creation of a CEDC with education at its core. The time is right for education as the engine of our local economy.
Community-engaged learning represents a true partnership between students and educators across all educational levels, as well as a range of community partners, local and provincial governments, businesses and non-profit groups. This model would give students the opportunity to get out of the classroom and lecture halls and apply what they are learning in a real-world setting, addressing real-world issues and problems at the local and regional level.
Sackville is a wonderful place to live and work and it is important to recognize that the central economic and cultural driving force in our community is the educational opportunity offered here. At a very practical level though, the Sackville system of schools, as well as Mount Allison, as a publicly funded university, act in silos and do not often collaborate in creating a learning community.
Sackville Schools 2020 has had a busy start to 2016. We have been working on crafting our recommendation to the local District Education Council (DEC), as well as meeting with principals and students, our local MLA, and other stakeholders. We'll be reaching out to many parties across the province and beyond who have a role to play in the education system.
The time is here for a new model of public education for Sackville students. There are two main reasons that Sackville Schools 2020 came into being. First of all, two of the three K-12 public school facilities in Sackville are in need of a large investment of money in order to repair the issues they face. Secondly, the public school system is under review across the country and we want this community to have a voice in creating a 21st century model that meets the needs of our children.
